Super League debacle leads to possibility of real change

The Government has published the report from the Fan Led review into football.

The AST welcomes the publication of the fan led review into football governance. The report takes forward many of the proposals we made including; the introduction independent football regulation, golden share voting rights for fans on key issues, better supporter engagement and shadow Boards, more effective financial controls, and fair distribution of wealth across the game.

This is a substantive piece of work based on extensive consultation with supporter groups.

The Super League debacle was further proof that both football and Arsenal need to change.

Earlier this year the AST, along with other fan groups, met the Prime Minister during the Super League debacle. We told him about our concerns as Arsenal fans under the ownership of Stan Kroenke and asked for his support and commitment to reviewing football ownership and governance in England. During this meeting Boris Johnson was amazed to learn that the AST had spent more time discussing our club with him than with Arsenal’s owner Stan Kroenke in the previous ten years.

The Prime Minister committed to undertaking this fan led review saying that he saw football fans and their clubs as part of the country’s ‘social fabric that needed protecting’. The AST then gave oral and written evidence to Tracey Crouch MP and her panel of advisers on behalf of our members.

We now call on the Prime Minister to carry through on his commitments to fans by speedily implementing this report so that fans once again have a greater say in the game they love.

Still Only Half Time

The AST would like to thank all our members for their support on this issue. However this is only half time. Now we have to work with all our members and fans and fan groups across the country to ensure the Government acts on these proposals. We will work with them and any new regulator to continue to build on this report's recommendations so that football is once more a game for its fans.
